"The book, Emotions of Normal People, was first published over fifty years ago. It did not achieve a wide audience and Marston is not mentioned in contemporary texts on psychology. However, as Dr. Geier's work has spread around the country, interest in Marston's work has awakened. Thus, it is particularly appropriate that Dr. Geier be the interpretive voice for this edition of Marston's text. In the first part of the introduction, Dr. Geier shares his personal experiences which led him to Marston's work. The results of these experiences shaped the eventual use of Marston's formulation of personality. Next, Dr. Geier directs the reader to those portions of Marston's text which have inspired his efforts in applying concepts to the work and personal setting. Marston's major contributions are identified and evaluated against current research and theory. In particular, attention is focused on Marston's neurological interest in the motor consciousness. Marston's descriptions of the primary emotions are still powerful and his examples stand the test of time. The third portion of the introduction places Marston's construct of the primary emotions with Geier's construct of Situational Perception Analysis. The achievements of these two men who labored fifty years apart in time have facilitated the development of the Personal Profile System.
